"Aaron had a WONDERFUL summer in Bologna. Thanks for the opportunity your program provided. He didn't want to leave Bologna or his new friends -- wants to live in Italy forever. It seems as though there was a good balance of freedom and structure. He loved his Italian class, of course, but also enjoyed the cooking classes. Really -- a once in a lifetime opportunity -- thanks!!" Sue and Wayne, parents - Norwich, CT
"I took Italian 2 last year and because of my studying this summer with Abbey Road, I've skipped up to Italian 4. My teacher even took me aside after I handed in my first assignment to tell me how I've impressed him and had the best work of my class. So, of course, I have to give credit where it is due...It really was a great summer and I learned a ton." Cara, student - Roslyn, NY NOTE: Italian is not a prerequisite. The program can accommodate beginner, intermediate and advanced levels.

About Bologna & Northern Italy
Bologna is the largest city in the Emilia-Romagna region, situated between Tuscany and Veneto. Bologna is a jewel of northern Italy, an elegant and sophisticated university town considered by many to be the gastronomic capital of the country. Bologna is a well-preserved medieval city rich with beautiful cathedrals, towers, piazzas and charming narrow streets, painted in dark red and orange colors typical of Northern Italy.
Bologna is home to Europe's oldest university, the alma mater of such classical authors as Dante and Petrarch. It is also a contemporary center of student life, popular with young Italians. With relatively fewer foreign tourists, Bologna is an authentic Italian city. For students truly passionate about Italian language, culture and cuisine, Bologna is an ideal location for the summer.
Academics
The academic component of the Bologna program includes two primary subjects: conversational Italian and Italian cuisine. The Italian language course is three hours per day and focuses primarily on conversation and daily usage. The course will be offered at varying levels to accommodate beginners to more advanced students.
The Italian cuisine course takes place two nights per week at a local culinary school in Bologna. Students will learn the fundamentals of Italian cooking as well as many traditional dishes.
The Bologna program will also offer recreational, cultural and artistic activities and workshops based on student interest.
Housing
Abbey Road students and staff live together in centrally located apartments. Students will learn how to live with a group of peers, in preparation for a successful college experience.
Students learn to share house responsibilities, buy and prepare their own food (using traditional Italian recipes) and to prepare group meals. This program emphasizes Italian cuisine: students will have the opportunity to participate in cooking demonstrations and then apply their knowledge when preparing group meals.
Typically, students will share double rooms within larger apartments. Female and male students will live in separate apartments, while the staff will live in the same complex, in an apartment of its own.
Daily Schedule
In the afternoons and evenings, students will have numerous options for sports and recreation, concerts and movies, cultural excursions and workshops, as well as free time.
In addition to planned activities with the Abbey Road group, students will have plenty of free time to pursue personal interests, make friends and explore the town. We strive to maintain a perfect balance between structured activities and free time. While we give our students this privilege, we expect them to adhere to the program rules and safety guidelines, especially the policies on alcohol and curfew, and generally to uphold our standards of responsibility and maturity.
Weekend Excursions
On the weekends, the group will explore nearby cities, including Modena, Ferrara, Verona, and the popular Adriatic beach town of Rimini. Additionally, students will enjoy overnight travel extension to both Florence. In Florence, students will explore the Uffizi and Accademia museums along with the various historic neighborhoods of this Renaissance city.
