"I felt that I learned a lot through my experience and the school that we attended. My Spanish has improved greatly. The teachers were very good and helpful. Almost all the excursions were awesome … My favorite excursions were the jazz concert, windsurfing and mountain biking … The staff were awesome, organized, fun and helpful. Really fun! Overall this was the best summer I've had in a long time … Cádiz was the best!" Stephen, student - Sandy, UT
"I loved the small classes and relaxed atmosphere. I thought the conversation class was especially helpful because it made me more confident in my actual spoken Spanish …" Hannah, student - New York City, NY

Our summer residential immersion program in Cádiz is a pre-college program for students completing grades 9-12, with a focus on Spanish language and culture. Students and staff will live and eat together in a charming student residence located in the historical Barrio del Pópulo, allowing them to prepare for college years and experience personal growth.
About Cádiz
Cádiz has over 150,000 residents, yet still has a safe, small-town feel, making it easy to explore the narrow streets, lush parks, and sidewalk cafés. People from Cádiz, or gaditanos, are known throughout Spain for their good temperament and friendliness. This alegría could be explained by the famous festivals, the perfect weather, the abundant seafood, and the breathtaking views from old town.
Andalusia, the birthplace of flamenco, possesses a unique culture, history, and architecture, as well as some of the best beaches in Europe. It is also one of the few remaining parts of Spain where it is still possible to experience the authentic Spanish lifestyle and language.
Academics
The Spanish language courses will be taught by experienced Abbey Road faculty and will be offered in small groups (typically 8 to 12 students), with a duration of approximately 3 hours. The first half of class will focus on grammar and vocabulary. The students will then be expected to put what they have learned into practice by participating in conversational workshops and activities designed by their professors. In the afternoons, three times a week, students will also be required to participate in Spanish culture seminars covering such subjects as flamenco, cuisine, cinema, and popular music.
Residence
The language courses are complemented by the residential immersion experience. Abbey Road students and staff live together in a student residence, with beautiful views of the Cathedral and only minutes away from La Caleta beach.
Students and staff will live in individual rooms and will have access to the 24-hour computer lab located inside the residence. They will typically dine in the residence cafeteria, but will also be given opportunities to sample Spanish tapas and Andalusian cuisine.
Our residential immersion program encourages and facilitates the use of Spanish through daily interaction, formal and informal courses, activities, and excursions. All of the Abbey Road faculty and staff who live with the students are fluent in Spanish and many are native speakers. They encourage our students to speak Spanish at all times. However, the key to success in an immersion program is the student's own motivation and effort.
Daily Schedule
During the week, students will start a typical day with the morning Spanish class. In the afternoons and evenings, students choose from a variety of activities depending on their interests: beach days, water sports, soccer, volleyball or other athletics, excursions to local sites, performances, shopping, and outdoor cafés.
In addition to planned activities with the Abbey Road group, students will have plenty of free time to pursue personal interests, make friends and explore the town. We strive to maintain a perfect balance between structured activities and free time. While we give our students this privilege, we expect them to adhere to the program rules and safety guidelines, especially the policies on alcohol and curfew, and to uphold our standards of responsibility, maturity, and respect.
Weekend Excursions
On the weekends, students and staff visit the quaint town of El Puerto de Santa María and travel to San Fernando to experience a typical Andalusian feria. Students will also take a special overnight excursion to visit the magnificent cities of Seville and Córdoba.

Travel Extension: Madrid
Upon the completion of the residence component, the group travels to Madrid where staff and students stay in a newly-renovated hotel in the heart of the historical district. The itinerary allows students to visit the world-famous museums, el Prado and Reina Sofia, explore splendid parks and diverse neighborhoods, as well as the outdoor plazas and cafés of the cosmopolitan Spanish capital. The Madrid itinerary also includes a day-trip to one of UNESCO´s World Heritage Sites, El Escorial, which is a must see when visiting the nation´s capital.
