Our summer program in Sorrento is a pre-college program for students completing grades 9-12, with a focus on Italian language and culture.
Abbey Road students and staff live together in a centrally located three-star hotel overlooking the sea. Students will learn how to live with a group of peers, in preparation for a successful college experience.
About Sorrento and the Amalfi region
The town of Sorrento presides over Southern Italy's famous Costiera Amalfitana, one of the most picturesque stretches of the Mediterranean coastline. Pastel-colored buildings, charming villages, and dramatic cliffs overlooking azure waters make for its breathtaking views. Sorrento has a long history going back to the Roman Empire when it was used as a vacation destination for wealthy Patricians. This region offers exquisite food, marvelous architectural monuments, and superb beaches.
Students live in an ideal location in the historical center of town within walking distance to the beach. Sorrento is a great program for those students who are interested in authentic Italian language and cultural immersion, making new friends and having the summer of a lifetime.
Academics
The academic focus of the Sorrento program is Italian language, developed and taught by our Abbey Road faculty. The course can accommodate beginning to early intermediate students. No prior background in Italian is required.
The Italian language course is three hours per week day and focuses primarily on conversation and daily usage. The curriculum combines classroom instruction, experiential learning and daily practice. Students study with experienced teachers, in small group settings, and have opportunities for individual tutoring by Abbey Road staff.
In the afternoons, three times a week, students will also be required to participate in Italian culture seminars. Some subjects may include Italian cuisine, cinema, music, art, literature.
Residence Housing
Abbey Road students and staff live together in a centrally located residence hotel. The residence hotel offers stunning views of the sea and is steps away from the lively main square. Students will learn how to live with a group of peers, in preparation for a successful college experience. Typically, students will share double rooms with other students of the same gender.
Daily Schedule
In the afternoons and evenings, students will have numerous options for athletics, recreation, café outings, concerts and movies, cultural excursions and workshops, as well as free time.
In addition to planned activities with the Abbey Road group, students will have plenty of free time to pursue personal interests, make friends and explore the town. We strive to maintain a perfect balance between structured activities and free time. While we give our students this privilege, we expect them to adhere to the program rules and safety guidelines, especially the policies on alcohol and curfew, and to uphold our standards of responsibility, maturity, and respect.
Weekend Excursions
On the weekends, the group will explore nearby seaside towns of the Amalfi Coast, including Positano, Amalfi, and the island of Capri. The group will also travel to Pompeii, where 2,000 year old ruins of the Roman city rest at the base of Mt. Vesuvius.
Additionally, during the last week of the program the group will travel to Rome for three nights where students will experience the treasures of the Eternal City such as the Roman Forum, Colosseum, Sistene Chapel and the Trevi Fountain.
