Our summer program in beautiful Verona, Italy, is a pre-college program for students completing grades 9-12, with a focus on the performing arts: theater, acting and playwriting, as well as conversational Italian. Verona combines two exciting programs in one experience: performing arts and study abroad in Italy!
Students will learn how to live with a group of peers, in preparation for a successful college experience. They will share house responsibilities, shop for groceries in local markets, and cook together using traditional Italian recipes.
About Verona
The home of Romeo and Juliet and the world famous Roman Arena, Verona is a romantic and trendy college town. It is the second largest city after Venice in the Veneto region and is a prosperous and vibrant center. Verona is a delight for enthusiasts of theater, acting, playwriting, singing and dancing due to its historical relationship with the performing arts. Its picturesque pedestrian streets and colorful piazzas make it the perfect background for a study abroad experience.
The Verona program is designed specifically for students passionate about the performing arts with a desire to experience a hands-on approach to theater, production, performing and acting. Students will also have time to immerse themselves in the language, cuisine and culture of Verona while also traveling and making new friends.
Academics
The academic component of the Verona program includes two primary subjects: performing arts and Italian language.
The performing arts component will be taught by a renowned local theater company in Verona and will take place four afternoons per week. Students will learn the fundamentals of Italian theater including the famous commedia dell'arte, improvisation, mime and movement, performance art, set design, set direction and stage acting. Students will have the opportunity to focus in areas of interest in a team atmosphere for the creation of a final stage production in the professional theater of the school.
The Italian language course will supplement the theater art component and will be taught by Abbey Road faculty. The curriculum focuses primarily on conversation and daily usage using both classroom and on-site experiential learning.
The Verona program will also offer a variety of workshops and activities based on student interest. Examples may include music and singing, play writing, cinema, cuisine, and culture.
Housing
Abbey Road students and staff live together in an apartment complex in the bustling historic center of Verona. Typically, students will share triple rooms within large apartments of 2-3 rooms. Female and male students will live in separate apartments, while the staff will live in the same complex, in an apartment of its own.
Students learn to share house responsibilities, buy and prepare their own food (using traditional Italian recipes) and to prepare group meals.
Daily Schedule
In addition to planned activities with the Abbey Road group, students will have plenty of free time to pursue personal interests, make friends and explore the town. We strive to maintain a perfect balance between structured activities and free time. While we give our students this privilege, we expect them to adhere to the program rules and safety guidelines, especially the policies on alcohol and curfew, and generally to uphold our standards of responsibility, maturity, and respect.
Weekend Excursions
On the weekends, the group will travel to nearby cities, including Ferrara, Mantova and Sirmione with its medieval castle located on the impressive shores of Lake Garda. The group will also spend a day in Milan, the home of Leonardo Da Vinci's painting "The Last Supper," the prestigious La Scala opera house and the infamous fashion district. Additionally, students will spend three days in Venice exploring the winding streets of this magical city famous for its Venetian masks, gondolas and bridges.
