Learning About College Admissions and the SAT
by Student, Alexis R. , Tennessee

My name is Nicholas, I am 15-years-old, and I will be entering my sophomore year of high school in August. I was born in Frankfurt, Germany and have never lived in the United States despite the fact that I am an American citizen and most of my relatives live in the U.S.A. This experience at Abbey Road’s College Prep program in Boston will give me a chance to learn more about the American culture and provide me with a bit more insight into what it means to be an American. It will be interesting to experience first-hand some of the differences between Germany and the United States.

I believe taking courses at Emerson College will definitely be a good experience for me, and it will be useful. Although I could study for the SAT by myself during the school year, I believe this course will be a lot more rewarding and interesting than studying on my own. Finding the time would also be difficult during the school year, as I participate in many extracurricular activities, such as cross-country, model United Nations, rugby, track and field, and chess. If I take part in this intensive course during the summer when I do not have school work or other commitments, I should be able to more efficiently study for the SAT.

I am not only looking forward to the SAT-based part of the courses but also to the college tours that we will be able to take. This is very important as I will not only be able to get a glimpse of what college life is like, but I will also be able to look at a variety of colleges and decide which type of campus I might prefer. Another positive aspect of the course is that we will all be staying on an actual college campus in college dorm rooms, which will allow me to have an even better idea of what college is like.

Lastly, I believe that the part of the course that includes learning how to write a college essay and learning about the college admission process is also something I expect to find useful. Although I do not need to write a college essay for a few years, this part of the course will help prepare me for that rather stressful time when college application deadlines approach. Knowing how the admission process works and how to write a good essay will be critical.
