Take a Break: 8 Simple Ways to Prevent School Burnout
by Abbey Road

As with any mental health issues, there is also a lack of information and understanding about school burnout.

It is the negative emotion a student feels towards prolonged study. You know you are having an academic workout when you are experiencing mental and physical exhaustion. This can lead to a lack of motivation, frustration, and poor academic performance.

If you or someone you know is showing signs of school burnout, here are eight tips that you can do:

Manage Your Time and Energy

If you don’t manage your time and organize the things you need to do, it can quickly go off the rails. Without a proper time management plan, you can miss deadlines or forget important school events coming up that you need to pay attention to.

Besides needing a schedule, you should also be wary of how many things you’re giving your commitment to.

If you’re doing so many extracurricular activities when there’s an exam coming up, you’re going to tire yourself out, mentally and physically. That’s why you should identify the school activities you’d want to devote your energy to. This includes doing extracurricular activities that are also still taking up your power.

Break Down Responsibilities

Are you worried about a looming deadline? Perhaps you have a large school project that you need to finish?

What you can do is break down that project into smaller tasks. And organize them based on impact. For instance, is writing a script for a school play can get half of the battle done?

If it is, then get it done as soon as you can. That way, you can give yourself more time to finish the other related tasks. You might even have a day to spare to rest.

That way, you won’t feel paralyzed due to the sheer magnitude of what you need to accomplish.

Do Things You Enjoy

You can enjoy yourself and get into some mild tomfoolery while still being a good student. After all, there’s the saying that all work and no play make Jack a dull boy.

If you don’t want to be a dull human being, we suggest that you pick a hobby. When you take the time to do things you enjoy, you can come back to your schoolwork refreshed and energized.

Create Healthy Habits

Being a responsible person is difficult, but it will be less complicated if you make it into a habit. All you need is to incorporate healthier habits into your life.

By turning these habits into a routine, you’ll find yourself making healthy choices without effort. Some healthy habits that you should build are exercising, having breakfast, and getting enough sleep.

When building healthy habits, it helps to have someone do it alongside you for some other people. You might want to ask your friends to do it with you if you wish.

Have Realistic Goals

Don’t beat yourself up over goals that are impossible to achieve in the first place. When you set unrealistic goals, it’s like setting yourself up for failure.

People rarely, if ever, achieve greatness overnight. Sometimes, it doesn’t even happen until years have passed. Therefore, you should learn to set goals that aren’t so high that they demoralize you instead of motivating you.

Take Small Study Breaks

There are plenty of effective study tips and tricks out there. However, one of the most effective tips for preparing for an exam is remembering to take small study breaks in between.

No matter how much you love to study, your brain needs that time to rest and recuperate to register the information you’re feeding it adequately.

If you don’t break up your study sessions with breaks here and there outside of when you have to eat lunch or dinner, your brain is going to exhaust itself. It can take a toll on your mental health as well as your overall performance.

Please don’t beat yourself up over it and slave away the entire day by studying without any breaks. Otherwise, you’re going to have school burnout.

Get Outside

Sometimes, you need to step out for a while before dealing with your homework, projects, and other school commitments. Spending some time surrounded by greeneries can help improve your mental state as a student.

Therefore, it might be a good idea to grab your trekking poles and head out for a day trip on a hiking trail.

If there are no viable hiking trails near you, you can still enjoy the power of going outside to destress. Simply taking a walk in your neighborhood can do wonders for your stress levels. Plus, if you’ve been staying all day indoors, you can get some much-needed time under the sun.

You can even take responsibility for walking your dog if you have one to make going outside more of a habit.

Ask for Help

Sometimes, you need someone to rely on in challenging situations. In these instances, don’t be afraid to ask for help.

Asking for help or even just reaching out to people can give a massive weight off of your shoulders that you didn’t even know was there in the first place. In some cases, you don’t even need someone to help solve the problem with you. Sometimes, you need someone to be by your side, and there’s no shame in that.

By applying the tips listed above, you’re one step closer to preventing school burnout from happening. Taking a proactive approach ensures that you can perform well at school and do the things you enjoy.

  1. You always have to give yourself a rest and find a balance. If you learn the material 24/7 you’ll quickly get bored and exhausted. And if you dedicate 2-3 hours to studying every day and also do other things and get enough rest, everything goes smoothly!
